Menu Home Upfront Now Up Books Towns Structures People Firms Lexicon SMALL, Gordon Born: 1927 Died: 1995 09 19 Architect Eminence grise of the KwaZulu-Natal branch and ISAA president in 1980/81, died in Maritzburg on 19 September. His partner, Eric PETTIT, co-founder of the practice of SMALL & PETTIT, established in 1965, predeceased him. The practice had received Awards of Merit for the Faculty of Arts Building (with Hexagon Theatre) on the Maritzburg campus of the University of Natal in 1972; the Natal Playhouse in 1987 and for the Tatham Art Gallery in Maritzburg in 1991. Gordon was Small by name but not by nature. He was larger than life, but beneath a somewhat theatrical personality lay a deep commitment to the arts and architecture, his family and society. In summary, it was Gordon's refusal to be inhibited by politics, his caring and optimistic individualism that enabled his creativity to flow in the hostile world of apartheid. He was an English-speaking liberal with an SA passport. South Africa has lost a noble man, an eccentric, theatrical and sometimes eclectic personality. [Obituary by Melvin, Peter.
