Rex (1974: 375) records him as being in the architectural service of the ZAR PWD. The Longland's Directory of 1899 records him as 3rd Clerk in the PWD Administrative Section and postal address as 239 Bloed Street Pretoria. He applied for overseas leave and passport during the South African War in February 1900 (Schoeman, 2011: 184).
