MSc Arch 1964 (Chicago)
Marley Scholarship for Wits. Architectural Lecturer
The 1968 Marley Scholarship for post-graduate research has been awarded to Mr. Mel von Broembsen, lecturer in the Department of Architecture at the University of the Witwatersrand. This R2,000, two-year scholarship, administered by the Institute of South African Architects, will enable Mr. von Broembsen to do research at Wits. in "Steel Technology" for his Ph.D. (Architecture).
At the completion of his schooling in East London, he studied architecture for three years at the University of Cape Town. After being awarded a Foreign Student Scholarship from the Illinois Institute of Technology he transferred to Chicago where he studied under the German architect, Mies van der Rohe – the acknowledged world leader in designing in steel and glass.
Mr. von Broembsen attained his M.Sc. (Arch.) in Chicago in 1964, and during this time gained considerable experience in design and construction in steel. After a short stay in South Africa and a return visit to Chicago for further study and experience, Mr. von Broembsen took up a lectureship at the University of the Witwatersrand, lecturing to second-year architectural students in Building Construction, specialising in steel and timber.
This research will help fill a most pressing need in the field of steel utilization in South Africa, and will help create an awareness of the possibilities for the use of steel in the construction of buildings. For example, in Johannesburg, although most of the industrial buildings are built of steel, only two commercial buildings will have used steel as a prime medium in their construction – Metal Industries House, and the new Trust Bank Centre.
Further considerations which make this an important research project are the ever-increasing labour costs in the building and construction industry which to some extent can be offset by the use of steel, and the advantage of rapid construction and early occupancy of steel buildings.
