Anthony Carden DOHERTY died on 14 July 2010 after a long illness. He was 80. Born on 15 February 1930, DOHERTY completed high school at St Andrew's College in Port Elizabeth before studying architecture at Wits, where he was influenced by modernism. In the 1950s, he joined a Pretoria-based practice that had been founded in 1904 and eventually became known as BURG, LODGE & DOHERTY, later as BURG, DOHERTY, BRYANT & PARTNERS and most recently as BILD. Over his 50-year architectural career, DOHERTY was responsible for the design of several architectural landmarks. The Pretoria Art Museum; Multiflora Flower Market; the National Observatory in Sutherland; the South African Reserve Bank Head Office in Pretoria; the Hans Merensky Offices in Parktown; and the Palace Hotel at Sun City (supervising architect) are amongst his best known works. BILD has been credited as the firm that has “made the most continuous significant difference” to the appearance of Pretoria and its buildings over 100 years. DOHERTY had a talent for design, a love of new technology and a zest for life. His buildings and his life are his legacy.
