He holds a B Building (1972) and a B Arch (1974) from UPE and a M Sc(TRP)(1979) from UP. He worked from 1975 to 1980 in the architectural office of the Department of Community Development in Pretoria and from 1980 to 1981 in the Town Planning division of the City Engineer in Port Elizabeth. He joined the staff of the Department of Architecture at the then University of Port Elizabeth (now Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University or NMMU) as a Senior Lecturer in July 1981. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2000. His teaching duties have included Design, Urban Studies, History and Theory. Research activities and publications have dealt with coastal development, urban heritage conservation and urbanization issues. He was appointed Head of Department in 2004 and, following the merger which created the NMMU, was appointed in 2007 the first Director of the NMMU School of Architecture which includes the Department of Architecture and the Department of Architectural Technology and Interior Design. He has been active in practice while serving as an academic, in partnership for a short while with Albrecht HEROLDT, but mostly as a one man practice. Important practice projects include the Boesmansriviermond Beach Cottage, the New Law Courts (in association with others), and various Integrated Development Plans. He served on the board of the Eastern Cape Institute of Architects for many years serving as President from 1989 to 1990.
