Currently little is known of Coltman's origins. He had been working in the Transvaal in the service's of the Town Engineer's Department. He was on active service during the First World War where he was wounded. despite this he left for England to join the Heavy Artillery (Jnl ASA 1917, 1(2):12). He was listed as an absentee member of the Transvaal Provincial Institute of Architects from about 1931 to 1938 when he was working for Booty & Edwards, Kuala Lumpur in Malaya. When he registered with the Institute of South African Architects in 1927 he wrote from an address in Battery Rd, Singapore. He left the area during the Second World War but returned in 1948 and still maintained links with the ISAA. He wrote to the Secretary of the ISAA telling him that all his documents had been lost during the Japanese invasion of the Malay States. Of these, he said, he most regretted losing his Association of Transvaal Architects certificate of membership, 'the one I had to work for' (ISAA mem records.). In 1959 he was recorded as a retired member, being of London, England.
