Hannes MEIRING was born in Potchefstroom in 1934 and qualified from the Cape Town School of Architecture in 1958. In 1962 he won a scholarship from the then West Germany government to study at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich. After his return in 1964 he established a practice in Pretoria and became active in the field of architectural heritage preservation and conservation.

Hannes MEIRING was the Sophia Gray Laureate in 1995.

Was a recipient of the Simon van der Stel Foundation - Heritage South Africa Gold Medal in 1985 and of the Medal of Honour for Architecture by the SA Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns in 1989.

Was at one stage in partnership with Gilbert COLYN (cf COLYN & MEIRING).

In 1966 he was a signatory to the broadsheet, CREDO

In 1977 he drew the Palace of Justice for the stamp that accompanied the First Day Cover commemorating the centenary of the Supreme Court in South Africa.
