BArch 1996 (Pretoria, Cum Laude) - Final design title: Noodsentrum Vir Aardbewings

Did a year of Landscape Architecture studies at the University of Pretoria before electing to switch to architecture in 1991. After graduating he worked first for BOB MOULD Architects in Walfish Bay, Namibia. Here he worked on a design for Walfish Bay Container Terminal for which he designed the Harbour Gate which received an Award of Merit from the Namibian Institute of Architects.

In 1999 he, with Ferdinand HOLM, won the design competition for the reconstruction of the burnt wing of Munitoria (unrealized) to be done jointly with HOLM JORDAAN HOLM.

In 1999 he joined CMAI ARCHITECTS, of Thesen Islands, Knysna, South Africa where he worked on, amongst others a project for a hydraulically operated drawbridge.

He was awarded the SAIA Rome Scholarship in Architecture (2001) where he spent a year in The British School at Rome (BSR) working on a proposal for a self-sustainable bridge apartment on the River Tiber.

On his return to South Africa he worked for DHK ARCHITECTS in Cape Town spending time on devising sun-louvre devices for retrofitting an inner city building.

In 2005 he relocated to Namibia where he was both architect and contractor for the Damaraland Clay Project, Ugab River, Namibia, funded by Mark Mackaness from York, England.

On his return to South Africa in 2006 he purchased a section of mountainous fynbos veld where he set about an experimental self-sustaining scheme for an off-grid home in the Klein Karoo. Here he investigated the potentials of vertical axis wind turbines for electricity generation and ram-pump technology for water. He suffered serious set-backs when a veld fire caused by a fallen gas stove consumed all his belongings, including the records of photographs and drawings of his time in Rome.

In 2017 he was approached by Greg TRUEN of SAOTA to act as design consultant and project manager for the restoration and refurbishment of the Farm Buffelsdrift which Truen had bought as a personal get-away and olive production venture. Truen particularly wished to engage Booyen's expertise gained in mud construction for purposes of desiring an authentic restoration of the extant structures as well as sympathetic additional facilities. This project was rewarded by the receiving a Gold Medal (one of two) from the Domus Restoration and Conservation Award in Italy (conceived and promoted by the company Fassa S.r. and University of Ferrara). Because of the prevailing restrictions on travel caused by the Covid-19 pandemic the award was announced virtually online on 2020 07 02.

Jaco claims skills in Sustainability skills in off-grid living with specific technical knowledge of hybrid PV & wind systems, direct solar heating, boreholes and solar pumps, alternative pump technology including ram pumps and air lift pumps. His technical expertise includes the practice of carpentry, welding, machining lathe, mill, brick laying, rammed earth, adobe, poured earth, electrical, work plumbing, laser cutting, water jet cutting, steel folding & bending and irrigation systems.

He has stated the following as his manifesto:

Nature does not intend to be beautiful. It is focused on survival by accurate problem solving. It has the ability to create both complexity and simplicity into a perfect adaption between organisms and habitat.
The built world is a manmade inclusion in a global natural ecosystem. During the design process, symbiotic - and specifically mutualistic - relationships between the built world and this natural global ecosystem should be formed. There are many clues available in the sciences (Chemistry, physics and biology)
A good building should be in harmony with its climate similar to a whale in the ocean, an albatross on a long flight or a cheetah on the savannah. Although the purpose of adaption is survival and not creating beauty strangely this is the ineluctable result.
