From 1898 HUDSON-HOLDGATE was articled in London to one JT Holdgate, probably a relation of his. Later he was employed as a junior assistant in the offices of EO Jacks and of Sill & Leeds in London. He then joined the London County Council Architects Department (n.d.) during which period he measured Hampton Court Palace in his spare time and travelled in Europe. During the First World War he was on active service in Flanders and by 1917 he was a ROYAL ENGINEER in charge of Boulogne South Base Work. Soon after the end of the war he came out to South Africa. He joined the Public Works Department in Pretoria in 1920 and remained in the Public service until he retired (n.d.); he was elected a Fellow of the RIBA in 1927.
