PROF. J.P. SNYMAN

As of March 25 1975 Jeep Snyman is no longer with us. Not only is the loss felt by many of his friends, it is also a special a loss to the community. His short life of 39 years was characterized by extraordinary energy. After he graduated from the U.P. he worked for a time as an architect. This was followed by a period as a researcher at the NBRI of the CSIR where, at the same time, he studied towards a master's degrees in architecture and urban planning, a degree he earned with distinction. Through his involvement in the renewal of the Pretoria school of architecture he was soon appointed as a senior lecturer on the staff. He was at the same time editor of Plan and in that role brought a new dynamic look to the journal. He was next tasked with initiating the new school of architecture at the University of Port Elizabeth. Within a short time he developed it into one of the most active in the country. Typical of his flexibility, his next post was as head of the new school for Building Management in the UK. This was followed by his appointment as Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts.

Through all these years he became known as a champion for the environment. It is largely through his efforts that Pretoria was saved from a freeway scheme, the Kruger National Park from a grotesque head and Bakensvallei traversed by means of an alternative route. His contribution to the protection of the Garden Route is well known.

As part of his conservation activities Jeep was active in a large number of associations, among others on the committee of the Transvaal and Cape Institutes. In addition, he was musical lover, collector of curiosities, a deep sea diver and an excellent graphic artist and speaker.

His friends will remember him for his energy and determination counter-balanced with modesty, politeness and sense of humor.
