| | CHOINIER, ECBorn: fl. 1897 Died: 1930Architect |
Also spelt CHONIER
Was a Belgian who was working in Johannesburg as an architect between 1897 and 1907; he was listed as working in Bulawayo in 1898. Nothing is yet known about his training. The Bloemfontein Post (Dec 12, 1904) and the 194 Johannesburg directory both spelt his name incorrectly as Chonier. He prepared designs for the Grand Theatre in Bloemfontein in 1904. The theatre was carried out to his design. Choinier was responsible for the design of several houses in Parktown, Johannesburg between 1905 and 1906. His career between 1907 and 1930 is obscure, and he is again heard of in December 1930 when he tendered for the building of the second phase of Sobantu Native Village houses at Pietermaritzburg, obtaining the building contract. It would appear that by this time Choinier, if the same person, was working as a building contractor.
