Son of RS Chick, a pioneer sugar planter, Chick was born at Rosehill Sugar Estates, Umgeni (now Durban North). He was educated at Durban High School and served articles in England. After qualifying in England, he returned to South Africa, married and shortly afterwards left for New Zealand where he practised for about seventeen months before returning to South Africa and setting up practice in Durban in 1909. In 1910 he was joined by BV BARTHOLOMEW who became a partner in 1912 (cf CHICK & BARTHOLOMEW); MMF POOLE joined the firm in 1935 and became a partner in 1939 (cf CHICK, BARTHOLOMEW & POOLE). He was Secretary of the Natal Institute of Architects from 1912 to 1914 and President from 1925 to 1926 and again from 1932 to 1933. He lived latterly at 23 Poynton Place, Durban, where he died.
