Born in Springs. Studied at the University of Natal (BArch 1970), the University of Pennsylvania under Louis Kahn (MArch 1971), and Columbia University, New York (MSc 1978). Taught design at the Natal School (1974-81) and concurrently ran small practice with L Ferreira Da Silva and B Stafford. The practice concentrated on single and multiple unit residential buildings. Link with Hallen Theron and Partners goes back to student days when he was employed by them during university vacations. Worked for them on graduating
in 1970 and again on his return from Pennsylvania in 1973. Joined practice as partner in 1982.
