JOHNSON, Brian Charles

Born: 1941

Architect


Born in Bath, England; graduated from Bath University of Technology (1965). Emigrated to South Africa (1967). Private practice (1972). Partnership with Andrew MURRAY to form JOHNSON MURRAY ARCHITECTS (1981). Involved in the study of Anthroposophy, the philosophy of Rudolf Steiner. Living in a new country has helped heighten awareness of natural growth patterns and formative forces. Work is always experimental. Opposed to the superficial application of fashionable historical allusions; currently studying philosophical geometry, proportional systems, rhythms, and the forms of prehistory.

Brian JOHNSON was conferred a Master's of Architecture degree at the University of the Witwatersrand in December 1987 with Dennis RADFORD as study leader, the study is titled "Domestic Architecture at the Cape, 1892-1912: Herbert Baker, His Associates and His Contemporaries."

Recipient of the Gold Medal Award from the South African Institute of Architects in 2000.
