Landscape Architect

Roberto BURLE-MARX was born in São Paulo in August 4th, 1909. He visited South Africa on several occasions in the 1970s, meeting with and lecturing to local professionals as well as collecting South African plant material for use in his executed designs. He was influential in bringing his abstract expressionist landscaping approach to the already established 'Little Brazil' architectural idiom that had become favoured since the late 1940s by practitioners on the Highveld.

He was visited by and hosted Mira FASSLER KAMSTRA and Patrick WATSON at his 36,5 ha estate in Barra de Guaratib where he celebrated his 80th birthday.

He died in Rio de Janeiro in 1994, at the age of 84.
