Was a graduate of WITS in mechanical/electrical engineering. He later obtained his RIBA Diploma in Architecture through the School of Arts and Crafts in Port Elizabeth. The latter was a pre-condition of his father-in-law Hendrik SIEMERINK for him joining his architecture practice when he married Geertruida BRINKMAN nee SIEMERINK. He worked in partnership with her and her father H SIEMERINK in the practice SIEMERINK and BRINKMAN, later SIEMERINK, BRINKMAN and VAN ROOYEN, of 19 Reserve Chambers, Donkin Street, Port Elizabeth (1959), thereafter BRINKMAN, VAN ROOYEN and BROWNE of that same address (1969). Brinkman was, in the main, responsible for technical aspects of the firm's design production, namely services and construction drawings as well as construction supervision and project management (Bruce Brinkman notes to Marguerite Pienaar, 2020).
