Menu Home Upfront Now Up Books Towns Structures People Firms Lexicon CALVERT, John Born: fl. 1853 Died: 1854 Architect Where Calvert trained is uncertain. According to Radford (1979:113) he was probably trained as an architect and civil engineer in Britain and had worked in Jamaica before he came to South Africa in 1853. He surveyed the Catholic Church of St Michael, Rondebosch, Cape Town, and designed St John's Church in Long St (1853). He entered into partnership with P PENKETH (cf PENKETH & CALVERT) in Cape Town in 1854. In 1854 he made designs for a Hall of Science (Cape Town?) and towards the end of that year went to Namaqualand. It is not certain if he returned to Cape Town after this date. He donated a model of a Jamaican cathedral to the South African Museum in Cape Town.
