Engineer and Master Builder of the CASTLE OF GOOD HOPE (Cape Town). His early life is not known. A decision was taken by The Seventeen that Dombaer be employed by the VOC (Dutch East India Company) as Assistant and paid a monthly salary of twenty-four Guilders. He arrived on 18 August 1665 at the Cape aboard the Nieuw Middelburg assigned to Goske. On 26 June of that year they selected a site to replace the existing Fort. The departing commander Z Wagenaer recommended to C. van Quaelbergen that Dombaer direct the continued construction. While the exact time of Dombaers departure from the Cape is not known, he was, by the beginning of 1672, in India. Here, having been promoted to Junior Merchant, he inspected the fortifications of Negapatanam in February and March of that year. From here he went on to Batavia where, in January of 1675, he was sent on to Amban to examine the fortifications of the Moluccas. In July 1676 he inspected the fortifications on the island of Saparua. He was hereafter made fiscal of Macassar and in December 1676 promoted to Merchant. In the following year he was appointed Secunde of the Moluccas, given mainly to erecting fortifications. He died some weeks prior to being instituted as the Secunde of Tenate in Batavia in December 1777.
