ADAMS, Harry Archer

Architect


Born in Leytonstone, Essex in England, although his death certificate gives his birthplace as Hackney, London. He was articled to W Westmorland and AH Kinder, architects and surveyors of Pall Mall, London. From 1899 to 1902 Adams worked in the Architects' and Surveyors' Department of the London County Council before he came to the Transvaal in 1902, accepting a post as a quantity surveyor in the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT in Pretoria. He married in 1903 and became the chief quantity surveyor of the PWD in 1908. Adams was a founder member of the South African Chapter of Quantity Surveyors and became its president in 1909, re-elected 1910 and 1911. He died in Pretoria at his home Kelvindale in Balmoral Avenue.
