WHEELER, Robert PatersonBorn: fl. 1923
Wheeler was working in Pietermaritzburg from about 1923 until 1929. By 1930 he was listed as an absentee member of the Natal Provincial Institute of Architects. He was listed as a lapsed member by 1933. His best-known building is the former Ansonia Hotel in Pietermaritzburg, designed in 1925, in the Tudor style popular at the period, that is to say adorned with black timberwork on a white ground. The idiom seems to have been particularly favoured by hoteliers in and around Pietermaritzburg at this time, the Hilton Hotel is another example of this type of work belonging to the same period.
