Currently Wells's origins and training are unknown. He worked first in Johannesburg where he met FJ ING with whom he collaborated on the competition for the Durban Club around 1898, which they won. They entered into partnership in 1901 (cf WELLS & ING) and moved to Durban. Wells remained in partnership with Ing until 1903 when he entered independent practice. He continued to practice on his own account in Durban until about 1906 after which date there is no further record of him in the country. Foundation member NIA 1901; committee member NIA 1903. (Hillebrand 1975:212; SAAR Feb 1936:65) Notes on the photograph: A contemporary photograph album, compiled by a representative of Stewarts and Lloyds South Africa Limited, covering the period 1905 to 1921, includes a photograph (on page 13 of the album) of a portion of a double storey building at 308 - 310 Smith Street, Durban . This building accommodated various tenants including the Stewarts and Lloyds offices, Southern Life, and J. Sharp: Typist. The photograph is annotated above in a neat hand with "DURBAN MARCH 1905". The photograph is however largely of interest as it also accommodated the offices of the architect E. P. Wells. A painted sign board fixed next to one of the entrance doors at the ground floor, reads:
