Was articled to John PERRY in Cape Town from May 1923 to July 1926. He enrolled in the part-time course at the Cape School of Architecture, Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town and remained there from 1924 to 1927. From December 1926 to April 1927 he was architectural assistant to GH COX, Cape Town. He then entered the office of WH GRANT (1 May 1927) where he remained until December 1928. From February 1928 (1934 according to his ARIBA nomination papers of 1934), Van der Riet worked for AAR McKINLAY in Durban where he remained until October 1929. He joined the office of the Borough Engineer in Durban late in 1929, where he remained until at least 1934. In about 1935 Van der Riet moved to the Transvaal (Gauteng) where he commenced practice on his own account in Brakpan. In 1969 he was in partnership with his son, Pieter de St. Jean VAN DER RIET, (cf HB VAN DER RIET & VAN DER RIET). He retired 1971. Reg Prob RIBA Cape Town 1924; ISAA 1933; ARIBA 1934.
