Born in Namsos in Norway, Torstenson received a certificate from the Architectural Faculty of the Polytechnic State Academy of Norway. He came to the Cape Colony in 1896, marrying in 1903 and practising in Cape Town with offices in Strand Street. He was a member of the Cape Provincial Institute of Architects and resigned from the Institute of South African Architects in 1934. He designed several homes in the Cape.
