STEWART, Robert Ian

Was possibly born in Cape Town where he was articled to WH GRANT for five years from 1921. He also studied at the Cape School of Architecture from its foundation in 1921 and later at the University of Cape Town on the inclusion of the school into the University. In 1926 he left to spend a year in Edinburgh with Dick, Peddie & Walker Todd, travelling on the continent and visiting Rome, Florence and other places. He also visited South America and Australia before returning to South Africa in 1927. He rejoined the office of WH Grant, and passed the RIBA examination held at the University of Cape Town in 1935. At the time he was resident at Heydon, Avenue Protea, Fresnaye, Sea Point and became an Associate member of the RIBA in 1937.
