SLOAN, William James

Born: 1875
Died: ?

Worked in Johannesburg from 1902 and in Nigel from 1934. He was born in Catrine, Ayrshire and educated at the Aryshire Academy, going on to study at Glasgow University before he came to South Africa in December 1902. After eighteen months in Durban he moved to Johannesburg, employed as a draughtsman with the municipality in about 1904. Around 1906 he joined the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT where he spent four years before joining JC COOK in partnership (c1910?) (cf. COOK & SLOAN) in Boksburg, Benoni and Johannesburg. By 1915 Sloan was listed c/o A Sloan, Norwood, Johannesburg and in 1917 he was listed at the PWD, Johannesburg. In March 1924 Sloan, 'late of Benoni', joined MJ HARRIS (cf. HARRIS & SLOAN) in partnership in Johannesburg until, six months later, the partnership was dissolved by mutual consent; Harris was mayor of Johannesburg at the time. Sloan appears to have continued in practice in Johannesburg until 1934 when he moved to Nigel.
