According to Lewcock 1963:444, Shepstone arrived at the Cape in 1820, a mason, architect and master builder.

According to Jackie Diesveld, his great great granddaughter, he arrived at the Cape in 1820 as a mason and ultimately became a missionary. She has no evidence of him ever being an architect or master builder.

His first wife, Elizabeth Shepstone, died and is buried in the Peddie district, Eastern Cape. (see details)
