Was a leading British architect who prepared plans for a church near Port Elizabeth, drawings of which were published in 1891. It was in reference to these plans that Baker made a 'Plea for English Gothic' (Afr Archt Jul 1911:36), in response to 'Mr Hudson's reference to Norman Shaw's church near Port Elizabeth ... in the original design for this church, the external windows of the North elevation were entirely covered by lattice screens, showing how this great master instinctively felt that Gothic Revival architecture required modification to suit the bright climate of South Africa'. Incidentally, the Hudson referred to in the text was EW Hudson, an enthusiast of Gothic Revival architecture and the father of Stanley HUDSON. Shaw's drawings are thought to have been for the Church of St Cuthbert, Port Elizabeth and were not used, supposedly on account of the cost involved. Service, in his chapter 'Arts and Crafts Architecture and the 1890s' (1975:126, 127), illustrates Shaw's designs for 'a church in Port Elizabeth' and says that the church was executed to alternative designs by Shaw.
