Born in Paarl, Cape Province, son of Daniel Retief (1861-1944) and Annie Maria nee Coaton (1865-1935). Professional education began at the University of Cape Town in March 1930. He participated in the 1932 student tour which visited England, Germany and Holland and took the RIBA examination at the University of Cape Town in 1936. An observatory was the topic of his thesis. He joined BM McDONALD in partnership in Cape Town in 1937 (RETIEF & McDONALD). In 1959 he is recorded as of address 23 Grove Building, Grove Avenue, Claremont, Cape Town, Cape Province. In 1969 he is recorded of McDONALD and RETIEF of address 304 Main Street, Paarl, Cape Province.

He married Elsa Minnie de Cock(1917-19??) in Wellington Cape Province on 1940 09 14 and they had an adopted son (FS).
