Was the fifth son of President Reitz of the Orange Free State. He trained as an engineer in the Netherlands and in 1928 was Town Engineer of Paarl. Although his professional interests were in Engineering (he became professor of Engineering at Stellenbosch University) he maintained his membership of the Institute of South African Architects. Drawings for the proposed town hall at Franschhoek appear to have been signed HL Reit, perhaps being HL Reitz.
