| | ROSE, EdgarBorn: 1867 Died: 1946Architect |
Some say that Rose came to South Africa for health reasons and some say that he came to seek his fortune in the Kimberley diamond rush. In either case he had trained as a chemist and worked as a pharmacist, preaching as a lay minister in his spare time. It was this interest which led him to design more than thirty churches for the Anglican Mission in and around the Orange Free State between about 1896 and about 1929. According to Harber and Kearney (Building April 1991:15) he funded his own three year study for the ministry at St Augustine's College in Canterbury before returning to South Africa: 'commencing at ThabaNchu and working subsequently in the Orange River Colony and Basutoland he used his untutored interest in architecture and building to set about providing shelter for worship.' The results were sometimes spectacular, notably his design for the Church of St Patrick at Waai Hoek near Bloemfontein, now demolished. The building is illustrated in the article by Kearney and Harber. Around 1929 he and his family left Bloemfontein to settle at Pinetown in Natal. His surviving plans and drawings were donated to the Durban School of Architecture by his daughter, Hilda Ditchburn, who taught Ceramics at the Natal Technical College. (Bierman 1955; Building April 1991:11-18; Fransen 1982; Natal Museum News no 29, Sep 1985; Picton-Seymour 1977; Schoeman 1985) All truncated references not fully cited in 'References' are those of Joanna Walker's original text and cited in full in the 'Bibliography' entry of the Lexicon.
