| | REID and McCOWATEstablished: 1888 Ended: 1895Architect |
The partnership or association between AH REID and RL McCOWAT in Johannesburg from about 1888 to about 1895. In his FRIBA nomination papers (1898) McCowat listed the names and dates of a number of buildings in Johannesburg on which he had been engaged but made no mention of any partnership with AH Reid. In this list, however, are several buildings on which he is recorded elsewhere as having worked with Reid. Thus some sort of partnership or association may be assumed. Although the second market building in Johannesburg might have been considered an important enough building to include in nomination papers in applying for Fellowship of the RIBA, McCowat did not mention being involved with them. (McCowat's FRIBA nom papers 1898; RAU doc; The Star Suppl 4 Oct 1890; SAAR Feb 1947:45, 46; Van der Waal 1984, 1987) All truncated references not fully cited in 'References' are those of Joanna Walker's original text and cited in full in the 'Bibliography' entry of the Lexicon.
