| | READ, Charles EBorn: fl. 1851 Died: 1875Architect |
Was working in Cape Town by 1851 where he designed an infant school. Read appears to have worked first as a clerk in the Railway Engineer's Department in Cape Town. In 1860 he submitted a design for competition for the Houses of Parliament, Cape Town, and was awarded joint first premium for his design 'Gothic'. By 1861 he was in a partnership with J WELCHMAN in Cape Town (cf WELCHMAN & READ) which lasted until 1867, during which period he and Welchman designed a number of buildings throughout the Cape Colony. Read appears to have left for London in 1868 from where he submitted a design for the second competition (1875) for the Houses of Parliament, Cape Town, under the title 'Southern Cross'. (Radford 1979:128; Langham-Carter MS, UCT Libr) All truncated references not fully cited in 'References' are those of Joanna Walker's original text and cited in full in the 'Bibliography' entry of the Lexicon.
