Was born in Melbourne, Australia, the eldest son of EM POWERS and brother of FW POWERS. He was educated at King Edward V11 School in Johannesburg and at Durban High School; he studied engineering for a year (1929-30) part-time at the University of Cape Town and worked in the offices of the Reinforcing Steel Co. in Cape Town. In 1931 he returned to Durban and entered his father's office as an architectural draughtsman, attending Natal University College as a part-time student. He qualified with a Certificate in Architecture issued by the University of the Witwatersrand. In 1936 he became a junior partner in POWERS & POWERS, Durban, and in 1937 was elected an Associate member of the RIBA. The outbreak of the Second World War interrupted his career; he returned to practice in Durban after the war. ISAA 1936; ARIBA 1937.
