Mitchell was born in South Africa, son of Marcus Duval Mitchell (1872-1942) and Alice Eliza nee Marshall (1879-1961), being christened in Simons Town, Cape Province. He studied architecture at the University of Cape Town, attending evening classes there from December 1925 until December 1930, articled to J MORRIS from December 1925 until December 1928. He was employed as an assistant in Morris's office from December 1928 until July 1930. For the last six months of 1930 he was a full time student at UCT preparatory to taking the RIBA examinations in December 1930, and was subsequently elected an Associate member of the RIBA in 1931, his address at the time c/o J Morris. In 1929 Mitchell won the John Perry Prize awarded by UCT. In 1959 he is recorded as a salaried member of the CPIA, his address being in Windhoek, SWA (Namibia).
MITCHELL married Olive Gladys Scott (1913-?) on 1934 05 31 in Wynberg, Cape Province (FS).
