Was born and educated in Pietermaritzburg, one of nine children of John Shaw Mason, a Pietermaritzburg builder, the son of an early colonist, Richard Mason. John Mason mortgaged to his son Lowell subdivision 14 of block E of the farm Sea View, bought in 1920. Nothing is yet known of Mason's training. He married Frederika Jacobus Peach in 1911 and by 1912 was in partnership with CW Methven in Durban (cf METHVEN & MASON). The partnership lasted about two years. In about 1914 Mason entered into partnership with WF BUCKLE (cf. BUCKLE & MASON), the partnership lasting until 1921. At some point Mason appears to have spent time in London and Europe, perhaps during the First World War; he wrote two articles on French cathedrals in 1914 and in 1918 repectively. So far only one building by him has been discovered. His hobby, listed in the South African Who's Who (1916) was entomology. He died at the age of thirty-six in the Berea Nursing Home. He had lived in Seaview, Durban.
