(Afrikaans Uitspan) An area set apart by Government where travellers could obtain water and pasturage for their horses and oxen. Even when it later became part of a land grant the owner was required by deed to allow travellers access to water and pasturage on the uitspan (outspan). Quite often, a winkel and a smithy, where travellers could have their horses shod and wagons repaired, were established nearby and this sometimes grew into a little hamlet where accommodation could be obtained.
