Tectonic ZA Wilhelmiens

_____________________________________________________

Tectonic ZA Wilhelmiens is a title coined for a research project related to the Dutch legacy of the designed and built environment of South Africa in the early twentieth century from 1902 (the end of the Anglo-Boer War) up until 1961 (the end of the Union of South africa and the founding of the Republic of South Africa). In this period there was much cultural exchange through the waves of emigration from the Netherlands to South Africa. The term 'Tectonic' refers to the influence of materials and manufacturing on the technologies of the time. At that time Dutch manufacturing industry was internationalising, exporting Dutch construction products and components to South Africa, and in some instances, setting up new industries in South Africa. South Africa has retained many structures with overt and less direct Dutch influence, a shared built heritage that includes the Art Nouveau (Nieuwe Kunst in Dutch) movement, Amsterdam School (see Wikipedia), Nieuw Haagse School and Dutch Modernism or Het Nieuw Bouwen.
