When Walton died he was hailed as ‘the father of vernacular architectural science in South Africa’. he was instrumental in founding the Vernacular Architectural Society of South Africa and was its honorary president until his death. He published widely in the field and many of his works are seminal and cited on artefacts.


Was a recipient of the Simon van der Stel Foundation - Heritage South Africa Gold Medal in 1987.
