There were problems and in 1864 the contractor got cold feet and walked off the site. Building work continued and on Thursday 10 September 1868 the official opening took place.

FIRM WELCHMAN AND READ OF CAPE TOWN AND BASED
ON ST MARTIN-IN-THE-FIELDS, TRAFALGAR SQUARE, LONDON.
THE FOUNDATION STONE WAS LAID BY LOUIS HENRI MEURANT
ON 15 JUNE 1864 AND THE INAUGURATION TOOK PLACE ON
10 SEPTEMBER 1868 DURING THE INCUMBENCY OF THE REV.
J.H.J. DU PLESSIS.
