People:Natal Harbour Department's Engineers: Architect
This was a prefabricated cast-iron tower fitted with lenses and lanterns supplied by Chance Brothers of Smethwick, England, floated on a bed of mercury. The location proved ineffective and in 1905 it was decided to dismantle and relocate it as the Port Shepstone lighthouse to help protect shipping from the Aliwal Shoal.
