ALUMINIUM CLADDING

Siemens Park, Midrand, Gauteng, 1996

Designed to a corporate identity recipe inspired by Richard Meier of the "New York Five" fame, Siemens intends to project this predominantly white and essentially modern image into the 193 countries in which it does business. The building is a conventional concrete frame building, clad with aluminium panels and double glazing units, all fitted into the same aluminium structural base frame. The aluminium panels are of sandwich construction — two sheets of aluminium bonded onto a honeycomb core to a total thickness of 9,7mm, with welded corners, and powder coated on the outside. The panels are hooked onto the aluminium frame, with the joints left open. The window panels are double glazed and sealed for thermal and noise insulation, and made to an 850 x 850mm module. All sun-facing windows are protected by horizontal and vertical sunscreens, the horizontal element doubling as walkway for the cleaning of windows. These sunscreens are made of 60 x 60 x 6mm industrial mild steel grating, hot-dip galvanised and powder-coated white. Powder-coating was done to Part 2 of SABS 1578, which sets guidelines for preparation and pretreatment of the metal surfaces prior to powder-coating.

ALUMINIUM BEKLEDING

Siemens Park, Midrand, Gauteng, 1996
