Abstract: Gives an overview of the history of settlement in South Africa, referring to both African tribes and Europeans, including the Voortrekkers. Discusses their respective republics and kingdoms, with special emphasis on capital cities (or kraals) and resulting buildings, such as council chambers and parliament buildings. Shows how these buildings and monuments were often depicted on stamps. Speculates on opportunities for architects in the New South Africa.
