LAMB, Thomas W

Born: fl. 1932

Was an architect for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Corporation of New York and designed theatres and cinemas for the Corporation in various parts of the world. P Morton Shand illustrated the exterior of the Ziegfeld Theatre, New York, by TW Lamb and Joseph Urban (c1925?) as an example of 'night architecture' which relied solely on what he considered crude floodlighting at night which highlighted coarse detail (Shand 1930: Fig 8, p.8). In South Africa, Lamb was responsible for the design of the Metro Theatre for Metro Goldwyn Meyer in Johannesburg (1932) and of the Metro Theatre in Durban (1936). In respect of the Johannesburg Metro, Lamb sent over a supervising architect, AB BOETTCHER, who shared the supervision of the building with COWIN, POWERS & ELLIS. COWIN & ELLIS supervised the Durban Metro, with or without Boettcher it is not known. According to Herbert (1975:234), AS FURNER used a pioneering air-conditioning system in the Plaza Cinema, Johannesburg (1930-31) but Lamb's system for the Metro a year later was far more sophisticated.
