The Kallenbachs were a well-known and respected Johannesburg family and Hermann KALLENBACH was Clifford Kallenbach's uncle. Clifford was educated at King Edward School and after matriculating, attended the University of the Witwatersrand from 1933 until 1937, then proceeding to London, qualifying and becoming an Associate member of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1938. He remained in Britain for some time and was appointed Architect to the Borough of Chingford. On the outbreak of the Second World War he joined the Forces as a First Lieutenant in the ROYAL ENGINEERS and was among the troops evacuated from Dunkirk. He requested a transfer to the South African Engineers on account of his father's illness. On demobilisation he joined his uncle's firm of architects, KALLENBACH, KENNEDY & FURNER, where he worked for three months before joining W PERCIK's office for six months and Gordon TUCKER for three months. He then set up his own practice in Johannesburg. Among the buildings he designed was a house for Ralph Wilson of Reuter's, in Orchards, Johannesburg; he carried out the alteration of Norman Erleigh's house 'Cloud's End' near Louis Trichardt into a motel and designed the Swazi Inn, Swaziland. He also designed Traduna House in Braamfontein, a Government school in Standerton and various other public buildings. In 1959 his address was 5th Floor, Investment Buildings, 97, Commissioner Street, Johannesburg. Kallenbach was also a talented artist, among his works was a portrait of Major Desmond Williams, MC and Bar.
