He studied architecture at the University of Liverpool School of Architecture from 1932 to 1937 when he graduated. In 1936 he returned to South Africa for a few months, spending a few months working in the office of PERRY & LIGHTFOOT in Cape Town before returning to Liverpool. He gained further office experience in his last year in the offices of RS Nickson, Liverpool and of Briggs & Thornley in Liverpool. On his return to Cape Town he spent several months in FM GLENNIE's office before entering the Architectural branch of the Johannesburg Municipality in January 1938, transferring to the City Engineer's Department, Johannesburg in the same year.
