HESSE, Francois

Born: 1887 05 26
Died: 1956 01 25

Architect

Year registered: 1927

Born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, son of Folkert Wilko HESSE and his wife Antje (nee Groeneveld) (See Family search) He immigrated with his family to South Africa in 1902 where they settled in the Cape. It would appear that he received his architectural training from his father where it is recorded that 'his son, working with him just now (1906), is a very promising and clever pupil.' (Men of the Times, 1906:213)

In Cape Town he practiced both on his own account and in partnership or in association with his father, FW HESSE (cf HESSE & HESSE, FW & F). Hesse was listed as an Associate member of the Cape Institute of Architects in the RIBA Kalendar 1915/16. He later practised in Nigel, Transvaal.

He married Johanna Wilhelmina Elizabetha Catharina Maritz on 1920 04 07 by whom he had two children, a daughter Sheila and son Francois Maritz.

His memorial plaque is in the Brenthurst graveyard in Brakpan (See eGGSA library). [Submitted by Morné van Rooyen.]

(ISAA mem list; RIBA Kal 1915/16)
