Born in Twijzel, Friesland, the Netherlands. Apprenticed as a carpenter. Arrived in Pretoria in 1935 and joined with the firm Clark and Dowie in his trade. In 1943 he founded the building contracting firm J Zylstra (Pty) Ltd. Projects they were responsible for include the Pretoria Club (Paul Kruger Street); Pretoria News Building (then Vermeulen Street); Transvaal House (c/o Vermeulen and Van der Walt Streets) and the Old Mutual Centre (c/o Andries and Church Streets).
Zijlstra served on the formal structures of the building industry for many years and was President of the Building Industry Federation of South Africa as well as being at one time President of the Pretoria Master Builders' Association.
