Born in Haarlem, the Netherlands. Arrived in Pretoria with his two brothers Jan and Hendrik and their families in 1888. In 1893 the brothers, of whom Hendrik (1862-1899) was a brick-layer, were awarded the contract to build the facilities at Warmbaths (now Bela-Bela). Jan and Herman set up a construction company after the Anglo-Boer (South African War). They built many houses in the Pretoria suburbs of Pretoria-West, Sunnyside and Arcadia. Books citing VAN CITTERT
