Born in Heemstede, North Holland, the Netherlands. Trained as a cabinet-maker. Arrived in Pretoria, South Africa in 1936. In 1940 started his own factory in Pretoria supplying an average of 30 000 chairs annually for libraries, offices, hospitals and suchlike institutions. He made an important contribution to the research of indigenous South African timbers in the furnishing and construction industry, particularly for use in parquet flooring. He served in the 1960s at the South African Bureau of Standards in Pretoria focusing on the quality control and application of wood-work. He died in Pretoria.
