Born in Schiedam, the Netherlands. Emigrated to the then ZAR accompanied by his wife Johanna Hendrika (nee Eijlbregt, 1861-1942). Here he practiced as a building contractor and was responsible for constructing, amongst others the defensive forts around Pretoria, Leprozen-Inrigting / Leprosy Asylum / now Westfort Village, and erecting the Sammy Marks Fountain.
